Nelson Mchunu is a sculptor who lives in Sweetwaters in the KZN midlands, South Africa. He was mentored by the renowned wildlife artist and sculptor, Allen Hallett, and now showcases his works at the Platform Gallery in nearby Lions River. Nelson, who creates bronze sculptures of pangolins among other wildlife species, has only ever used photographs as a reference.
The Fisher Foundation facilitated his visit to Manyoni Private Game Reserve in northern KZN where he was treated to a live pangolin experience. Karen Odendaal, the MD of Manyoni, was conducting a soft release and this provided a unique opportunity for Nelson to view the mammal firsthand. He was thoroughly inspired by this experience and will take away new interpretations to hone his artistic skills in the future.
